AS Level Art (ART-S)

Course Description
What will I learn on this course?
The aim of the Art course at Woodhouse is to:-

· Encourage and nurture individuality & creativity in students

· To give a broad understanding of art & design issues

· To teach skills, techniques and methods

· To foster a spirit of self-reliance, experimentation and motivation

· To help students achieve their goals

· We provide the opportunity to work in a range of media and disciplines including painting, drawing, sculpture, textiles (embroidery, weaving, screen and block printing, batik and tie-dye) and mixed media work.

· Almost all work begins with observational drawing which then forms the basis of more creative, personal work.

· Experimentation is encouraged. Personal sketch books for developing ideas are essential.

· You will learn analytical and documenting skills using a specialist vocabulary. To help achieve this, regular visits to galleries and museums are arranged, as well as in class discussions.

· AS is made up of two units: Expressive Study and externally Set Assignment.

· A2 consists of the two AS units plus two more units studied at a higher level: Research and Practical unit and Externally Set Assignments.

What kind of assessments will I have to complete to get my qualification?
AS
Each unit covers a period of nine weeks, during which time students will be required to address all eight of the Assessment Objectives set by the examining board. At the end of each unit, work is marked internally by the Art Staff. Students will be informed of the outcome of the internal assessment of unit one. In February, preparatory work begins on unit two which is the Externally Set Assignment. This is concluded with an 8 hour unaided timed test. Work is internally assessed as before and both units are then subjected to external moderation by the board.

A2
50% of all units is written work. A further year's work extends the skills and knowledge acquired for AS, offering opportunities to develop a more individual approach. The two units covered at this higher level are:

· A Personal Contextual Study involving various forms of research with a problem

solving exercise where students set and solve their own visual 'problem'.

· An Externally Set Assignment. This is concluded with a 12 hour unaided timed test.

Both units are internally assessed according to the Scheme laid down by the board which addresses the eight Assessment Objectives. External moderation takes place during the second half of the Summer term.

The College aims to hold an exhibition of work for parents, students and visitors at the conclusion of the course

What kind of student is this course suitable for?
· Students who wish to undertake further studies in art and design, usually at Art College or in further education.

· Students who are planning to take up careers for which an art background is relevant. These might include advertising, publishing, fashion, architecture, museums, theatre or art gallery work (Art at A2 is not essential for these however).

· Students who have a real enthusiasm and aptitude for the subject, but who do not necessarily intend to take the subject beyond the AS or A level.

What could I do with a qualification in this subject?
There are many careers in art and design, graphic design, product design, fashion, textiles, teaching, interior design and theatre design, to name a few. Most require further study at art school, Further Education College or university. Students wishing to take art after A level, generally go on to do a one year 'Foundation Course' before applying to degree courses in more specialist areas.

Art is also useful in careers such as advertising, marketing, architecture, publishing and the media. The study of Art helps you develop transferable skills you can take into any career or job. It is also accepted for Arts and Humanities courses at university.
