DRAMA AND THEATRE STUDIES

AS and A Level (Edexcel)

Campus: Cheadle and Marple

(28.07.09)

Course overview

Drama and Theatre Studies integrates theory and practice, offering a range of opportunities to develop drama and theatre skills creatively and imaginatively.

AS Level (year one)

Unit One

Unit One involves the exploration and study of two contrasting play texts. You will produce practical and written coursework on each play. You will also visit the theatre and write an evaluation of a live performance.

Unit Two

In Unit Two you will be involved as an actor or a designer in a full-scale group production. You will also produce either a monologue or a duologue.

A Level (year two)

Unit Three

Unit Three requires you to work as a group to create a piece of devised theatre, which you will need to research and evaluate.

Unit Four

In Unit Four you will study a historical set text, which you approach from the viewpoint of a director. You will also attend a production of a play from another historical period, which you will compare with its original performance conditions.

How you will learn

Your learning will take a variety of forms, including practical workshops, group discussions, rehearsals and performances. A certain amount of individual research needs to be done, especially in the second year.

How you will be assessed

Your coursework, both practical and written, will be marked by your teacher, and moderated by the exam board. The Unit Two performances are marked by a visiting examiner. Unit Four consists of a written examination.
