What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?
You will need to have obtained Grade B or above in both English Language and Literature GCSE. You need to enjoy reading widely and writing in a wide variety of styles.

Course Description
What will I learn on this course?
AS
Unit 1: Categorising Texts
You will study some of the reasons why people with different social, geographical and personal backgrounds use language in different ways for different purposes. You will learn ways of describing language, such as grammatical terminology. You will also study how three specific social contexts affect language use. These are:
1. Language and Gender
2. Language and Technology.
3. Language and Power
Unit 2: Creating Texts
You will learn to develop as a writer by adapting your style for different audiences and purposes. You will achieve this by analysing texts by other writers, and learning to reflect on your own style.

Unit 3: Developing Language
This unit has a detailed focus on two specific areas of language study: Child Language Acquisition and Language Change.
· Language acquisition - the nature and functions of language acquisition and social development of children from 0-11 years
· Language change - historical and contemporary changes in the English Language from Late Modern English (1700+) to the present day.
Unit 4: Investigating Language
In this unit you will apply your knowledge of linguistic methods and concepts to an investigation of your own choice. You will gain skills such as:
· Exploring and analysing language data
· Data collection methodology
· Analysis and interpretation of data using appropriate linguistic methods and techniques
· Evaluation and investigative conclusions.
What kind of assessments will I have to complete to get my qualification?
AS
Unit 1: Categorising Texts
You will sit a 2 hour examination. Two questions will be set - one on data comparison and one on social contexts.
60% of total AS / 30% of total A Level marks
Unit 2: Creating Texts
You will write two pieces of coursework, each for a different audience, for a different purpose, and in a different form. Your tutor will mark this work, but it will be moderated by the Board.
40% of total AS / 20% of total A level marks
A2
Unit 3: Developing Language
You will sit a two-hour examination, answering questions on data given you in the examination room.
30% of total A level marks
Unit 4: Investigating Language
You will write a report on your investigation. Your tutor will mark this work, but it will be moderated by the Board. 20% of the total A level marks
What kind of student is this course suitable for?
If you enjoy reading and writing, and are interested in questions about language, then this course is for you. You need to be able to think critically about your own and others' use of language, and be keen to learn new skills.
What could I do with a qualification in this subject?
There are an increasing number of undergraduate courses focusing on language study, communication studies and linguistics. The study of Children's Language Acquisition makes this course ideal for students considering primary school teaching. The study of language change illuminates History. The creative element of the course develops journalistic skills. The study of language also enhances the study of subjects such as Psychology, Law, Sociology and Literature. Students with an interest in other languages will also find it beneficial to have a deeper understanding of English and linguistics.
