Course Description
What will I learn on this course?
Mathematics at AS and A level builds on the work you have met at GCSE. All students will study Core (Pure) Mathematics , in which you will be extending your knowledge of such topics as algebra and trigonometry, as well as learning new ideas such as calculus. Core Mathematics makes up two thirds of the AS or A level course.

You will also study at least one of the following important applied branches of Mathematics:

· In Mechanics you will learn how to describe mathematically the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting on them, from cars in the street to satellites revolving around a planet.You will learn the important technique of mathematical modelling , where a complicated physical problem is turned into a simpler one that can be analysed and solved using mathematical methods.

· In Statistics you will learn more about how to analyse numerical data in order to arrive at conclusions about it.You will study further the important topic of probability , on which advanced statistical ideas are based.

What kind of assessments will I have to complete to get my qualification?
Assessment for Mathematics A and AS level is by written examinations:

AS Level
You will take three examinations, corresponding to the 3 modules you will have studied. Two of these will be on core mathematics and one applied mathematics.

A Level
You will take three more examinations - two core mathematics and one applied. You will also complete a piece of coursework worth 20% of one of the core modules.

Further Maths
If you also take Further Mathematics AS level you will study three additional modules (6 in the first year in total ). For A level further Mathematics you will study a total of 12 modules including further pure modules and more applied modules. You will obtain two A levels - one in mathematics and one in further maths. Further Maths is now a pre-requisite for a good Maths degree.

What kind of student is this course suitable for?
If you have a genuine enthusiasm for mathematics, are particularly good at algebra, and are not inclined to give up when faced with a difficult maths problem then AS or A level Mathematics is probably for you. It combines well with A levels in Physics and other sciences, and also with social sciences like Economics, Psychology, Sociology and Geography.

What could I do with a qualification in this subject?
An AS or A level in Mathematics is a highly regarded qualification both by universities and employers. An A level in Mathematics may be compulsory for degrees in Sciences, Engineering and Computing, and is strongly advised for many other degrees like Economics, Architecture and Psychology.

Entry Requirements
What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?
Mathematics is a very challenging subject requiring strong algebra skills at A Level. To succeed at A level, you should ideally find GCSE Maths fairly easy and be hoping for at least an A grade. Our minimum requirements are a GCSE grade B in Mathematics at the higher tier of entry.
For the really enthusiastic and outstanding mathematicians, who wish to apply to a top University for mathematics, we offer the opportunity to take two Mathematics A Levels (Mathematics and Further Mathematics), or an extra AS level (Further Mathematics).These courses need grade A at GCSE .
