Why study Fine Art?

Fine art is a rewarding and challenging discipline. The main reason for studying it is to develop and refine your skills in handling drawing and painting media while learning how to use the formal elements of art such as colour, tone, shape and form. You will also develop a critical and intellectual understanding of the work of a range of fine artists learning how to apply techniques and processes to improve your visual awareness.

What do I study?
You will learn to use materials and techniques of painting and drawing to analyse what you see and to communicate your ideas, thoughts and feelings in a visual way. You will develop your imaginative and creative powers and practice using a technical vocabulary to discuss Fine Art. You will also make several visits to galleries to see the work of artists at first hand. The course is broken down into several projects including an exam. The first year focuses on the development of practical skills, the interpretation of themes in Fine Art and the study of artists useful in creating a greater appreciation of techniques and processes.
During the second year you will refine your drawing and painting skills with a series of projects as well as write and illustrate a negotiated extended essay about an aspect of Fine Art. The course culminates in an exam where you will utilise your skills from the whole course to create a unique interpretation of a set theme.

Where does Fine Art take me?
Developing your creative understanding can be useful in many fields of learning as well as a range of careers. It is articularly appropriate for Advertising, Architecture, Industrial or Product Design, History of Art, teaching and work in the creative industries.
