Who is this course for?
The course is appropriate to all levels of ability. It is particularly useful to students completing their portfolios for university entrance. It can be invaluable to the experienced artist for ongoing study.

The course will suit all levels of ability.

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?
The course will cover all fundamental principles of drawing and painting the figure of the portrait. The use of all drawing and painting materials will be encouraged (painting optional). At the end of the course the student will be able to (Learning outcomes):
  • Construct a figure or a head
  • Create form by means of tone and colour
  • Place your subject matter in space
  • Distribute the weight of a head onto the neck and shoulders
What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?
Teaching will mainly take place on a adhoc basis throughout the course. All sessions will begin with an introduction which will usually be related to an aspect of art history. Reproductions will be shown and further study encouraged. Learning will take place in each students own terms and at his or her own pace. Extra time and teaching facilities will be available for beginners to face any problems which may occur. Learners will be encouraged to be aware of each others work and to learn from each other.

How will we assess your progress on the course?
A written and photographic record may be kept of progress throughout the course. Private tutorials will be available. Group evaluations take place at the end of each session. Each piece of work will be explained and commented upon. The students will be encouraged to discuss each others work.

What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
There is no qualification attached to this course.

What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
Homework relating to the projects will be continually available (optional). Gallery visits and drawing therein will be encouraged. An art history booklist is available on request.

What can I do after completing this course?
Continue life drawing to attain a higher level of understanding. Study art related subjects eg. Print making, painting and drawing and art history.

Are there any other costs? (e.g. materials, equipment or books I need to buy before or during the course)
The college provides paper and basic drawing materials. Equipment lists are available for those wishing to buy their own.
