About this course
The course is designed to broaden understanding of the subject and materials, building from initial tool use sessions to give participants the necessary skills to make fitted or free standing furniture using power tools.
The course is aimed at individuals with some experience of woodwork hand tool use who have a desire to build their own furniture or others who may already have worked in furniture making or joinery and wish to develop their knowledge and skills further.

Course tutor
Kate is the short course co-ordinator and tutor on furniture-making professional courses at The Cass. A cabinet-maker, furniture-maker and teacher with 30 years of experience following fine art training, theatre carpentry and set-building, Kate loves wood and beautiful objects with wheels, restoring and recycling interesting materials and using her rather calloused hands to create.
Course programme
In order to build the confidence needed to use power tools, this short course incorporates:
- appropriate construction techniques
- materials and jointing possibilities
- range of tools, tooling, accessories, capabilities and limitations
- measuring and marking out for power tools
- safe use and working
- adjustment and loading of tooling
- advice on purchasing tools and materials
Within this course there will be a set project to make which will be taken away at the end of the course. Once this is completed, there will also be the opportunity to work on short individual personal projects.
Teaching is for the most part workshop based, with practical demonstrations and handouts. There is regular one to one discussion, planning and feedback.
Access to the workshop will be from 10am until 4pm with morning and afternoon taught sessions. Class sizes are kept small to enable all participants to receive individual guidance.
