Course Overview:
For beginners or for those returning to the subject, this is a project-based course which will provide you with a thorough introduction to the general principles and skills of clothes making using a purchased pattern and/or upcycling clothes by mending and adding creative textiles such as applique, embroidery, couching and decorative stitching .

You will become confident in making garments using commercial patterns, plus choosing fabrics & styles that compliment you. You will also have the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to refit purchased garments and restyle them with some applique decorations or embroidery.

Course programme

Course Content:
You will make at least one garment to fit using either commercial patterns or by refitting/restyling an existing garment.
Learn to alter patterns to suit size and shape.
Learn about design, style and a variety of sewing techniques.
You will experiment and gain techniques with a Bernina sewing machine, different special Bernina presser feet, an overlocker, a digital embroidery machine and an embellisher needle machine.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

Calculate the size of the pattern in relationship to body measurements
Adjust the pattern to individual measurements using basic methods
Use pattern lays, grainline and selvedge correctly and follow pattern instruction sheets
Select suitable fabrics
Use machinery safely and correctly
Construct the garment to a professional standard and finish
You will collect a folder of handouts, notes and details of garment making techniques.
