Introduction
Our Managing Benefits Foundation & Practitioner Training course enables managers and practitioners from various disciplines, working in a wide variety of organisations, to explore generally applicable benefits management principles, practices and techniques.
Prior to attending this course, candidates will be emailed the following pre-course reading which has been extracted from the official APMG Managing Benefits manual:
1) Chapter 1 - Introduction
2) Chapter 2 - What is Benefits Management?
3) Chapter 3 - The Benefits Management Principles
4) Glossary
In advance of the course candidates should:
• Be familiar with the Benefits Management model (page 9) and be able to list both the 7 principles (the columns) and the 5 practices (the top part of the diagram)
• Be aware of the 9 themes that run throughout the book (they are introduced on pages 8-10)
• Understand and be able to list the key success characteristics of benefits management (page 10)
• Understand the difference between the terms output, capability, outcome and benefit (table 2.1 page 17) and be able to provide effective examples from your own experience that are different from the ones in the table
• Understand the benefits management objectives (page 21)
• Understand each of the Principles (chapter 3)

Course Objectives
- Understand the definitions, scope and objectives of benefits management, barriers to its effective practice, and key success characteristics
- Describe the seven principles on which successful approaches to benefits management are based, and demonstrate how these can be applied
- Apply benefits management at portfolio level, as well as at project or programme level
- Detail the five practices in the Benefits Management Cycle and provide examples of the techniques applicable to each
- Name the key roles and responsibilities for benefits management and the typical contents of the core documentation
- Implement a benefits management approach and appreciate the factors that will sustain progress
Course Outline
Foundation Part of the Course
Foundation level aims to measure whether a candidate understands the benefits management principles, practices, techniques, roles, responsibilities and documents, specifically to know and understand the:
- Definitions, scope and objectives of benefits management, barriers to its effective practice, and the key success characteristics
- Principles upon which successful approaches to benefits management are based
- Five practices contained within the Benefits Management Cycle and relevant techniques applicable to each practice
- Scope of key roles and responsibilities for benefits management and the typical contents of the main benefits management documentation
- Approaches to implementation and the factors to consider in sustaining progress.
- Multiple choice format
- 50 questions per paper
- 25 marks or more required to pass (out of 50 available) - 50%
- 40 minutes duration
- Closed-book
Practitioner Part of the Course
Practitioner level aims to confirm whether the candidate has achieved sufficient understanding of how to apply and tailor the guidance in a scenario situation. Specifically candidates should be able to:
- Plan the implementation of benefits management, select appropriate strategies to sustain and measure progress;
- Select and adapt principles, practices and techniques to suit different organizational environments;
- Identify activities that should be undertaken during each of the practices of the Benefits Management Cycle together with the accountabilities and responsibilities of each of the defined roles;
- Evaluate examples of benefits management information (documents);
- Analyse the solutions adopted in relation to a given scenario.
- Objective testing
- 8 questions per paper with 10 marks available per question
- 40 marks or more required to pass (out of 80 available) - 50%
- 2 ½ hours duration
- Open book exam (Managing Benefits guide only)
