Course programme

Course Content

The core elements of the course focus on maritime operations, management, law and technology and the related business environment. There is also an emphasis on the fields of port security and risk management, marine environmental and offshore studies, marketing and selected aspects of conceptual ship design. Students develop skills suitable for taking leadership and management responsibility in a wide range of maritime activities.

Students will gain a good understanding of maritime operations, management, marine law, accountancy and technology and the related business environment in which they work. The course will also provide technical knowledge of selected aspects of ship design and operation and/or related maritime land-based or offshore structures, sub-sea engineering/mining, environment, marketing, security, risk management and port operations. Students will develop skills to equip them for taking leadership and management responsibility in a wide range of maritime activities.

This course is delivered on either a full-time or a flexible, modular basis comprising intensive periods of attendance supported by work-based distance learning.

Completion of modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. Alternatively, if in addition, a project followed by a dissertation is undertaken by a student, this will lead to the award of a Masters degree.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching

The course is taught by staff from the School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering together with experts from industry. Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials and seminars, together with a number of guest lectures given by distinguished people from the marine industry. Throughout the programme, teaching and learning strategies are designed to encourage independent self study and teamwork, creativity and critical thinking.
