Course programme

In your first year, you will study algebra, differential calculus (dealing with rates of change), sequences and series, wave functions (trigonometry) and coordinate geometry. You also study statistics, which looks at data collection, graphical representation of data, probability and statistical models to interpret data.

In your second year, you will build on the foundations of what you've learned and study numerical methods, infinite binomial series, trigonometric functions and differential equations. You also study one unit of applied mathematics: either statistical modelling (S2) which is important for science and economics, mechanics (M1) which is useful for engineering and physics, or decision mathematics (D1) which links with computer algorithm design.

  • You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
  • In addition, to study this subject you must achieve at least grade A or A* in Higher Level Maths GCSE. All students with GCSE Maths at grade B or C will need to pass a Maths test before enrolling.
Example Maths Test [Word]

International students:

  • Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
  • IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.

Assessment is by written exam at the end of each year. Successful completion of the first year gains you an AS Level in Maths. Successful completion of the second gains you an A Level in Maths.

Maths is one of the core subjects in the curriculum and is highly prized by all employers and Higher Level institutions. Depending on which option unit you study, you can take what you've learned into a Higher Level Course in Science or Economics, in Engineering or Physics, or Computer Programming.
