Mental Health Awareness

Level: This is a Level 1 course.

What is the Mental Health Awareness Level 1 course?
This qualification is available for under 19s as well as adult learners. The qualification is appropriate for a wide range of people with an interest in raising their own understanding of mental health issues. It would be useful for those working within: the voluntary and community sector, management and supervisors, those whose role calls for interaction with the general public, and those involved in recruitment. It would also complement study in a range of areas, for example Psychology, Citizenship, PSHE, Healthcare, Social Care, Counselling or Public Services.

Course topics
  • What is meant by the term -Mental Health.
  • The definition and causes of mental health difficulties
  • Common perceptions of mental health difficulties and how stereotyping can affect people's perceptions
  • Where appropriate support can be sought
  • Cultural diversity within mental health issues
Entry guidance
There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. Access to this qualification is open to all candidates; however, a basic level of numeracy and literacy is required to comply with the Health and Safety, and assessment aspects of the qualification.

The qualification is ideal for learners who would like to:
  • Develop their knowledge of Mental Health Awareness
  • Improve their career prospects, or progress to further training
  • Complete the programme as part of their own continuous professional development
Teaching and Learning
You will receive 3 hours of classroom tuition a week. The course will be tutor led and you will take part in group discussions and small group work. You will need to take some notes during the sessions.

There is a small amount of personal study/research, around 2 -3 hours over the course.

Assessment details
This qualification is internally assessed and externally moderated.

Each learner is required to complete an assessment workbook covering the learning outcomes of the qualification.
