If you are an electrical engineer and need additional training to fully understand microprocessor systems, this part-time course – a module from the HNC/D in engineering qualification – will develop your knowledge of systems’ use in instrumentation, control or communication systems. We have a state-of-the-art modern engineering workshop equipped with a range of industry-standard equipment including millers, lathes, CNC tooling and laser cutters, along with fabrication and welding equipment, such as Tig, Mig and Arc welders and CAD suites.

About this course

As this module is part of an HNC/D qualification, you are required to be over 18 years of age and have the following qualifications: Two A Levels – preferably in maths or science OR BTec certificate or diploma in engineering or a related discipline - Mature students will be considered in light of relevant work/life experience - Non-EU students are required to have an IELTS or equivalent university qualification

Studying this module will enable you to: Understand microprocessor-based systems Design software for a microprocessor-based system Design and build an interface for a programmable device What skills will I gain? During this course you will: Understand the practical aspects of device selection and interfacing of external peripheral devices Study key stages of the development cycle Investigate and compare the applications of microprocessor-based systems Experience and develop software designs and write programmes for a microprocessor-based system Consider the design of programmable interface devices Design, build, programme, test and evaluate an interface for a programmable device Select and use devices Write and test suitable software in assembler or high-level language How will I be assessed? This is an assignment-based course and there are no exams You will be continually assessed throughout the course via assignments and the production of a detailed portfolio What can I do next? Completion of the module will enable you to: Use the skills you have gained in the workplace Continue with further study and progress to the HNC/D in engineering
