Molding is a collective name for various heterogeneous industrial production processes that have in common the fact of using as a tool a permanent form called a mold, an equipment designed and used in some industrial production processes such as molding, die casting, drawing, foaming or sintering. Depending on the different type of processing, the characteristics and technology of the mold change, although in schematic form it can be said that it is formed by a matrix and, possibly, by a punch. Medium and large molds are often built by milling, while for particularly small specimens, with complex finishes or for very high precision, in the order of a few hundredths of a millimeter, high-tech processes such as electroerosion or photoengraving are used. When designing a mold, particular attention must be paid to the draft angles: since the creation of walls perfectly aligned with the extraction movement could cause problems in the removal of the finished pieces, the walls must never be designed vertical, but must have a slight inclination (1 or 2 degrees) towards the outside. To illustrate, a cylinder should be transformed into a truncated cone in order to be extracted without problems.
