Resuscitation is a rapidly evolving area of medicine that crosses the boundaries of emergency medicine, intensive care medicine, anaesthesia and acute medicine. Early recognition of critical illness and resuscitation saves lives and reduces suffering for our patients. We are offering an MSc, Diploma and Taster MOOC to provide an opportunity for you to develop your skills in this area under the guidance of an international faculty. The level of study and knowledge will go beyond most specialist exit exams marking you as a potential leader in this field. We will bring together teaching on diagnosis, resuscitation, pathophysiology, imaging, toxicology, CRM and pre-hospital care/mass casualty medicine under a single umbrella. Resuscitation Medicine is arguably evolving into a subspecialty of medical care and with this course we aim to provide the skills to develop expertise in this field.
Who should apply?
The course welcomes students from medical, nursing and paramedic backgrounds from both overseas and Europe/UK. It is designed for trainees and consultants in Emergency Medicine and other acute care specialities,. It is also designed to assist advanced nurse practitioners and paramedics to gain skills in Resuscitation Medicine.

Course programme

Structure

The programme is part time and distance learning so you can study at home and in your own time. The resources of QMUL are open to students, including remote access journals and library facilities.

The MSc is a 3-year 180 credit MSc, including a 60 credit 10000+/- 500 word dissertation in year 3. It offers two years of structured web based teaching via an online learning platform. For students who wish not to complete a dissertation in year 3, a 2-year Diploma is offered based on the lectures, tutorials and course work

Each 15-credit module consists of approximately 20 one-hour pre-recorded lectures and linked one-hour tutorials with two or three lectures and tutorials delivered each week. Each module offers around 40 hours contact time and 110 hours self-directed study.

Modules

Section 1 – 60 credits

Year 1 Fundamentals of Research Aims:

To provide an introduction into basic skills required in academic medicine.

Objectives:

By the end of this module you will have a clear understanding of research methodology, legislation and ethics. You will learn how to submit work to journals and how to best present scientific findings. You will understand how to obtain and critically review scientific papers and educational material.

The Physiology of Shock, Shock Syndromes and Tools of Resuscitation Aims:

This module aims to teach you how to identify which patients require resuscitation and the tools by which this is achieved.

Objectives:

By the end of this module you will have learned how to apply the material studied in Module Two into clinical practice. You will have gained further insights into cardiovascular physiology and will have a clear idea of what is meant by resuscitation and how to classify shock. The most common causes of shock will be reviewed in detail. You will gain understanding of the tools of resuscitation: oxygen, fluids, inotropes, vasopressors and blood transfusion.

Cardiac Arrest, Airway Management, Oxygenation, Analgesia and Procedural Sedation Aims:

This module will equip you with knowledge of oxygen delivery, advanced airway care, respiratory support, procedural sedation/analgesia and state of the art treatment of cardiorespiratory arrest in adults and children.

Objectives:

In the first part of this module you will review the mechanisms for respiratory failure, non-invasive ventilation and advanced airway care. You will learn best practice in acute care analgesia and sedation. In the second part of the module you will focus on the best practice care for patients in cardiopulmonary arrest in a wide range of scenarios. In the final section of the module you will focus on the critically ill child and mother.

Emergency Care Aims

In this section you will review a wide range of acute medical problems that are at risk of deterioration in the early phase of care.

Objectives:

During this module you will develop the knowledge for a wide range of common critical care presentation. You will learn to risk assess many common presenting symptoms and identify patients at high risk. You will also better understand the on-going management of these conditions.

Year 2(60 credits) Trauma: The Disease Aims:

This module focuses on the assessment and initial resuscitation of major trauma.

Objectives:

During this module you will develop skills in the identification of traumatic injuries, imaging, the role of blood products/fluid in resuscitation. The emphasis will be on understanding the underlying pathophysiology of trauma shock. You will also gain deeper understanding of the interaction between all specialties involved in trauma care.

Diagnostic Tools in Critical Illness

Imaging, point of care ultrasound and point of care biochemistry in the assessment in critical illness

Aims:

This module focuses on the diagnostic work up in the early phases of resuscitation.

Objectives:

During this module you will improve your ability to interpret bedside metabolic parameters provided by blood gas analysis, and you will interpret the chest radiograph and acute computed tomography imaging as applied to acute care in critical illness. You will also gain an understanding of the role of focussed ultrasound and echocardiography in the diagnosis of acute illness and guiding resuscitation.

Toxicology and CBRN in Critical Illness Aims:

This module focuses acute toxicology as applied to critical illness.

Objectives:

During this module you will gain an understanding of toxidromes, diagnosis of poisoning, the approach to decontamination of patients and both supportive and toxin specific care.

Pre-hospital Care and Mass Casualty situations Aims:

The aim of this module is to equip you with a basic knowledge of pre-hospital care. It does not seek to provide training in pre-hospital care but rather to provide an understanding of the specific issues as regards the pre-hospital environment.

Objectives:

In this module you will gain an understanding of the pre-hospital environment and the issues faced by those who work in this area. Hospital based practitioners will gain knowledge as to what care is and can be provided pre-hospital and how mass casualty events are managed.
