This Multimedia Computing course runs in 2016/17.
Multimedia Computing is a course that encompasses the technologies behind the creative industry, which is one of the fastest growing industries the UK. We focus on developing student skills for a career in web and smartphone development, audio/visual creation as well as 2D/3D graphics and animation.
This course will give you the technical skills to design and apply the latest industry technologies. You will be able to develop smartphone applications, create dynamic web content, create video and animation as well as develop skills in user-centred design.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
- Accreditation by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional; partially meeting the Academic Requirement for registration as a Chartered Scientist; and, on behalf of the Engineering Council, partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer;
- an enthusiastic teaching team who are active researchers in their field and regularly update course content to maintain relevance of the material covered;
- the annual New Wizards Showcase where you will have the chance to exhibit your work to potential employers and create industry contacts;
- strong industry links which are maintained through guest lectures, exhibitions and joint projects;
- access to a new multi-million pound teaching facility, with a range of specialist equipment including the latest graphics and animation software, where you can perfect the techniques you have learned;
- the opportunity to apply for an industrial placement year working with a technology company.
Accreditation
The British Computer Society (BCS)
Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The first year of the course lays the foundation for the study of creative technologies. Subjects include: 2D and 3D content creation, user-centred design, computer architecture, programming and mathematical fundamentals.
Second and third year allows students to explore, more in-depth, topics such as web development, game concepts, media production, object-orientated programming, human-computer interaction, 3D modelling and animation. You will have the opportunity to work on real world projects, these are designed to prepare you for industry. This is done by placing the students into project teams and using external clients to prepare them for the future.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?The main approach to teaching and learning is the delivery of practical material in our state-of-the-art studio style environment. We believe in learning by doing and therefore many of our modules help you develop portfolios and projects of practical content.
In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice throughout your study.
You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 10%; coursework, essays, project and group work 60%; practical exams e.g. presentations, tests, etc.30%.
A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed: please see the page on the Add+vantage scheme for more details.
TEACHING CONTACT HOURSIn a typical week you will have up to 18 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:
Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 6 hours of tutorials each week
Medium group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week
