The course will give a very brief introduction to the notation and vocabulary of written music, and how the shapes on the page transform into audible melody, harmony and rhythm. Like learning a language, the first step is familiarity with a little theory, and these two sessions will begin the demystification process. This course would be an ideal start for those interested in the forthcoming Musical Analysis courses, or in any Music Appreciation courses where notation may be mentioned or scores examined. This is not a graded music theory course.

You will be taught using a range of techniques including short lectures, slide shows and discussions, practical demonstrations on the piano and guided listening sessions. Courses use a variety of materials including YouTube clips. Links to these are given on handouts so that further exploration may take place between classes if you wish.
