This short course will teach you about the critical thinking, strategic planning and technical skills required to launch, develop and manage your music or sound art career online. Under expert supervision, we'll pay attention to your individual needs, to ensure that each journey fits the bespoke framework required for your professional web presence. This course is especially designed for those who are confident with their portfolio and style, but are looking to better communicate this online. You may have your own website, but feel your online presence could be improved. We can enable you to fine tune your content, and migrate what you already have to sites such as WordPress, giving you greater control over this content. You will consider and discuss best practice and examine current examples of professional websites. This will be followed by scoping and wireframing sessions, and discussions of approaches, tools, accessibility, social media strategies, online archive and publishing opportunities. There will also we lab-based workshop sessions to introduce you to WordPress. There also be a focus on bringing you up to speed with the professional online context of your music, the importance of which has never been greater in the music industry. We'll even guide you through issues such a music law, studying copyright and collection, performance royalties and contracts. This course is hosted in our state-of-the-art computer labs at Goldsmiths. You do not need to bring in a laptop, but are more welcome to do so. You will also be asked to complete online research between sessions so that you can draw the most out of this ten-week programme. Course programme

Week 1 – Course Introduction How to ensure that your professional online presence is best suited to your professional practice.. Overview of digital outputs: portfolio websites, social media engagement, inclusion in proprietary sound/music channels, online advertising.. Exploring good/best practice through critique of existing examples of practitioner’s online profiles.. Week 2 – Student presentations The opportunity to present and review your work, needs and exiting online media (recordings, social media engagement, images, etc) in a supportive environment.. Week 3 – Introduction to website design and build #1 Planning/reviewing, scoping and wireframing.. Discussion of approaches, tools, accessibility, social media strategies, (students will create wireframes for discussion in week 4). Week 4 – Review of student wireframe roughs. Music and sound arts – contemporary contexts: copyright, performance royalties and collection.. The role of PRS/MCPS.. Week 5 – Introduction to website design and build #2 Wordpress. Week 6 - User experience (UX) Know your audiences, designing for your audiences. UX exercises and best practice.. Week 7 – Website workshop #1 Students are invited to work on their websites in a facilitated environment. A course tutor will be on hand to help and answer questions.. Week 8 – WordPress Workshop #2 Students are invited to work on their websites in a facilitated environment. A course tutor will be on hand to help and answer questions.. Week 9 – Review - Student presentations. Group feedback and discussion of student projects, focussing on positive suggestions to support and improve each project... Week 10 – Website/strategy reviews, plenary session Review of students’ progress and tips to ensure that professional digital strategies are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Agreed upon, Realistic, Time-related).. The second half of the session will be tailored to respond to issues the students identify the previous week..
