The aims of the course:
The course is designed to enable you to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the creative arts/crafts
- Analyse and evaluate your own work and that of other artists and designers and synthesise this into essays and sketchbook annotations
- Develop your own work and create a professional portfolio that will help you access higher education or employment.
The course suits those who have already studied design and technology (resistant materials or textiles or art and design) at GCSE and have an aptitude for these areas. You may be aiming for a career in art, craft and design and will have good organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines. The course is studied over 2 years and is equivalent to 3 A Levels.
About the course:
The BTEC National Diploma in Design Crafts is a broad based course that gives you the opportunity to work in a variety of art and design areas including drawing, metalwork, jewellery, woodwork, plastics, ceramics, textiles, computer animation, graphics and photography.
You will develop your skills through experiencing studio and workshop based assignments and working with a range of artists, designers and crafts people. From an initial broad exploration of materials, you will develop a specialist knowledge and understanding of the place of art, craft and design in history and in contemporary society.In the early stages of the course you will undertake projects that will cover a general theme; for example, natural forms, cityscapes and the human figure and will work in a variety of areas. You will subsequently undertake a major project based on two specialist areas.
The National Diploma also covers You will investigate themes such as workshop safety, creating and erecting shows, portfolios for interviews and your final show, work experience, displaying and mounting work etc. These will help you to adopt professional approaches when working and communicating with others. You will also visit local and international places of interest, including galleries in this country and abroad. Previous National Diploma students have visited Florence, Venice, Beijing, New York, Paris, Barcelona and London.
