Course content:
This course is a gentle introduction to computing and is suitable for anyone who wants to gain practical skills in using a computer. The course is designed so you can work through exercises at your own pace to develop your skills in using a computer, mouse and keyboard. You will learn how to:
1 Switch on your computer and use the desktop.
2 Use the computer safely.
3 Create and edit documents using a word processing application.
4 Create lines, shapes and pictures.
5 Use colours and different text styles to enhance your work.
6 Get to grips with some of the computer jargon.
The course is entirely practical. Using IBM compatible machines, and Word XP, word processing software.
Assessment procedure:
You will produce a small project, for example, a menu, your own personal letterhead or a poster, and answer a set of questions relating to the exercises you have completed.

Progression opportunities:
You will have the knowledge and skills to use Office 2003 to create basic documents. To re-enforce your learning you are then able to enrol on the OCR Computer Literacy and Information Technology course (New CLaIT), or ECDL.

We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, depending on the course and the number of hours a week you study, you may be eligible for an Adult Learners†Grant.
