Course programme

This qualification is appropriate for the widest possible range of candidates from the general public through to those working with substance misusers. These candidates may include students over 18 years of age wishing to gain a broad and objective understanding of the causes and consequences of substance misuse.
The qualification will also be appropriate for older candidates who wish to raise their general awareness of drugs in our society. More specifically, this qualification will be of great interest to those working or volunteering in a variety of fields who may come into contact with those involved in, or affected by, substance misuse. The course provides a basic understanding of drug effects, types of treatment, aspects of the law, first aid, communication skills and community support. It is therefore useful to those who need general background knowledge or as a progression route for those who wish to work in a more specialised substance misuse role
Entry Requirements·Drug Awareness Level 1 OR some experience of working in the field.·Candidates should be at least 18 years of age·It is not neccesary to have an interview but candidates must be prepared to attend regularly and complete all the written tasks required for this course. There are at least 22 pieces of written work that candidates need to complete to achieve this qualification in 16 weeks. Therefore, minimum levels of literacy and numeracy necessary to comply with the Health and Safety aspects of the qualification, as well as a qualification equivalent to GCSE English Language.

Aims and Objectives
This qualification aims to:

·Provide a nationally recognised qualification in drug awareness at an intermediate level
·Introduce quality control and measurable standards in drug awareness education
·provide an accessible and flexible learning opportunity for a wide range of individuals.

The objectives of the qualification are to help candidates to:

·Understand drug use/misuse
·Recognise and respond to drug use/misuse
·Communicate with young people about drugs
·Work with communities
·Understand solvents and volatile substance abuse
·Show awareness if issues concerning alcohol and young people
·Consider blood-borne infections to drug use/misuse
