Course Overview
This programme is designed to meet the needs of individuals who wish to gain practical work experience while working towards a recognised qualification.

Course Structure
The programme consists of 8 units and is delivered over two years with attendance at College for two days per week.

  • Recognise a healthy farm animal
  • Provide food and water
  • Clean and prepare animal housing
  • Move a farm animal
  • Weigh farm animals


Students will attend 1 mandatory day at a farm near Faversham which offers experience with farm animals and small animal husbandry, plus 1 â€" 2 potential days of work experience in a different animal placement.

Qualification Aims
Gain experience with caring for animals leading to higher qualification at Thanet College or elsewhere

Assessments/Examinations
Students will be observed and assessed on practical work through work experience to ensure that they are competent. A portfolio must be compiled; students are expected to gain evidence for their portfolios from a variety of sources.

Cost / Equipment
Tuition is free under 18years of age but there are additional costs:

  • £25 Materials (per annum)
  • £40 Voluntary contribution towards travel costs
  • £102.50 Registration/ Certification

(Registration/certificationis free for students under the age of 18)

Students will need to provide suitable protective footwear and waterproof clothing for the farm placement. It is essential that all students have a current Tetanus inoculation for health and safety.
