Course programme

The aim of this qualification is to recognise the skills and competencies of candidates in the workplace. The qualification is about the development and implementation of good practice in health and safety matters in the workplace. Candidates will have a great deal of authority, influence and autonomy and will be required to make decisions within agreed limits and boundaries.

This qualification has been accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) at Level 5 and is worth 108 credits. Many Universities will accept this qualification as suitable entry requirements for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate study in health and safety. Guided Learning Hours: 482. Completion time is usually between nine and twelve months.

Successful candidates may apply to the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) for membership at Graduate level (GradIOSH) and, upon completion of an open book assessment and a minimum of 2 years Initial Professional Development (IPD), can achieve Chartered level membership (CMIOSH).

Course structure:

NVQ's are completed largely at your workplace and there are no mandatory classroom sessions. You will be given a highly trained mentor / assessor as soon as you register. Your mentor will attend your workplace to give you specific guidance on the subjects and shown how to produce a portfolio of evidence based on course work and practice.

Course timescale:

The course completion time is usually between nine and twelve months, but we work together with participants to work at their pace.

At the introductory visit candidates will:

  • Be introduced to the NVQ system
  • Gain an understanding of the health and safety NVQ
  • Conduct an audit of their current competence
  • Develop an action plan for the completion of the NVQ
  • Learn how to develop a portfolio of evidence

Support tutorials will be held at agreed intervals following the induction day during which your mentor will:

  • Explain the requirements of each Unit of Competence
  • Outline the key areas of the domain knowledge and understanding
  • Discuss the various forms of evidence available
  • Assist candidates to develop their initial action plans
  • Assist candidates to develop their portfolios of evidence
  • Assess any completed units of the NVQ
