Is the Course for Me?
This course is an ideal first step for learners looking at a career in the field of either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.

What will I Learn?
Areas of study include:
  • OCNW Certificate in Engineering E3 (Practical)
  • Health and Safety in the Work Area
  • Developing Personal Work Area
  • Planning and Organising Work Tasks
  • Mechanical Engineering Operations
  • Electrical Engineering Operations

Learners will also study Basic Skills / Functional Skills Level 1 in IT, Communication & Application of Number.

How will I Learn?
The course is mostly practical work and is carried out in the workshops at the ETEC Centre. The ETEC facility is also equipped with extensive Electrical, Mechanical and IT resources.

Work consists of a series of practical tasks with underpinning knowledge, ensuring that a range of necessary skills are developed throughout the course.

Please note, learners must provide overalls and protective footwear (not trainers) for the workshop, along with standard stationery equipment.

How will I be Assessed?
The practical tasks that are part of this course will be tracked and built into a portfolio of evidence. Underpinning knowledge will be assessed with written and oral questioning.

There will be tests, online and multi-choice, as part of the Functional Skills elements of this course.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits do not form a part of this course but learners are encouraged to take part in enrichment activities.

Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience does not form a part of this course although learners will spend significant time in the College workshops.

What can I Progress to?
Our aim is to get all learners who are successful on this course onto a Pre-Apprenticeship course in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Maintenance.

Other Learner's Experiences;
Previous learners have successfully gained employment within the industry and progressed onto higher level qualifications.

Female participation is encouraged on all Engineering courses
