About this course

Entry requirements for second stage training is dependent upon completion of first stage familiarisation training. Familiarisation training is common to all types of tanker and consists of three options: At least three months' sea-going service on tankers, in order to gain operational experience and knowledge of safe operational practices in loading, carrying and discharging, bulk oil, chemical or liquefied gas cargoes; or At least one month sea-going service on tankers of less than 3,000 GT engaged on voyages not exceeding 72 hours in order to gain sufficient operational experience and knowledge of loading and discharging procedures; or Completion of an approved tanker familiarisation course. It will be the responsibility of individuals to bring with them to the college evidence which satisfies the entry requirements. Failure to comply with the entry requirements will prevent the issue of an STCW certificate. Please note: The course is also open to managers or any other professionals who need to be familiar with tanker operations but do not require a dangerous cargo endorsement.
