Is this course right for me?

The course is designed for anyone wishing to pursue a career in adventure sport and coaching.

What will I be learning?

Great emphasis is on individuals gaining national governing body qualifications alongside their academic studies. Throughout the two years there are huge opportunities for skills development. Residentials, expedition and trips, both in the UK and abroad, are an integral part of this course. You will have the opportunity of achieving the following awards: MLTE - Mountain Leader Training/Assessment; Single Pitch Award Training/Assessment; RYA - Powerboat Level 2, Safety Boat and advanced; Day Skipper theory and practical/Coastal Skipper theory and practical; VHF/Radar/Sea Survival/Diesel awards; BCU/UKCC - Levels 1 - 3 coach (kayak, surf and canoe) Training/Assessment; 1 - 5 star Training/Assessment (inland); 4 star (surf and sea).
The modules you will study are: Business start-up; sports coaching; water and land based skills; health and fitness; health in the community; anatomy and physiology; exercise science; professional development and placement; equipment and facilities management; corporate leadership and development; activity management; special project; water and land based leadership; sports and community development; biomechanics; psychology.

How will I learn?

Your performance in each module will be assessed through a combination of coursework and end of module examination. You will be assessed through a variety of methods which may include essays, exams, portfolio work, presentations, case studies, work based learning, practical assessment and report writing. You will be given assessment criteria in each case, which are used to judge the extent of your achievement.

Modules are introduced through briefings, discussions, practical workshops and seminars. Seminars and critiques encouraging group interaction, critical reflection, evaluation and presentation punctuate project work. The programme is assignment-based and requires a large amount of independent study and research activities. Learners will undertake in-depth reading on all subject areas. Course work is assessed at the end of every module and an indicative grade is given on all assignments. Progress reports are provided during tutorials.

What else might I want to know?

This course offers a blend of practical skills and academic studies. It is delivered by highly qualified, professional tutors who have extensive experience of the adventure sport industry. This course is partly delivered at the South Devon College Noss Marine Academy - a purpose built adventure sport and marine centre at Noss on Dart.

This qualification will provide numerous opportunities for you and allow you to go almost anywhere in the country. The structure of the course means you will gain other qualifications, such as mountain leader, the single pitch award and "coast" skipper, it's all interlinked! The level of tuition is extremely high and the tutors really know their stuff.

What can I do afterwards?

You could either go straight into employment or you could progress to the third year of a Bachelor of Science Honours degree at the University of Plymouth. Alternatively you could go into employment as a specialist coach with specific disciplines; outdoor centre manager; instructor within an outdoor centre; freelance multi-disciplined instructor or expedition leader or guide.
