This five-day course covers the theory and practice of hearing assessment in infants and children as the basis for appropriate audiological management.
The course combines theoretical evidence with practical knowledge and skills which you'll be able to apply immediately in whatever clinical setting you work in.
You’ll also have an opportunity to network with a range of professionals from different backgrounds.
The course is updated annually to reflect the latest trends in technology and clinical practice.
The course is run by the UCL Ear Institute.

About this course

Following this course you'll be able to:
assess cognitive and behavioural development of infancy and childhood
identify appropriate environment, arousal state and acoustic signals for assessing behaviour change in detection of sound
use evoked potentials for deriving information on auditory thresholds in early life
support parent information, inclusion and involvement as the main facilitator in their child’s communication development
recognise the role and remit of the audiologist and others within a reciprocal team for early assessment and intervention built around the individual child and family
disseminate information about the child for informed decision-making by relevant agencies with parents at the core

You'll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend all five days.
This course is accredited by the British Society of Audiology (BSA) and the British Academy of Audiology (BAA) – reflective practice.

Course programme

This course aims to help you:

  • understand the principles behind newborn hearing screening and early intervention for neural plasticity
  • optimise the auditory potential for life-long communication and social integration
  • establish skills in behavioural and objective methods of hearing assessment in infants and children as the basis for appropriate audiological management
  • integrate speech-based assessments into the protocols for evaluating hearing
  • assess and address the hearing needs of children within their family context
  • apply new techniques in clinical placements and implement change within departmental practice if appropriate
  • constructively evaluate and recognise constraints in observed clinical practice

It also aims to:

  • develop coherence in the roles of all professionals in the paediatric audiology team
  • introduce a culture of reflective practice, service evaluation and professional learning
  • help you understand the responsibility conferred by professional training in paediatric audiology and importance of continually developing knowledge and practice
Teaching and structure

The course uses blended learning methods to cater for different learning styles. It's taught by Carolina Leal and external contributors.

It will run on five consecutive Fridays.

Seminar-style, interactive teaching is supplemented by:

  • group exercises and class discussion
  • practical demonstrations
  • completion of case-studies with peer-evaluated clinical procedures
  • use of video of clinical practice by students for reflection and self-evaluation
  • self-directed reading and pre-reading around current structure and practice in paediatric audiology services
  • e-learning course work
