What are the entry requirements?
You must be employed full time in the construction industry.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 1

  • Reading: You can read and understand the main points and ideas in different types of writing - for example magazine articles, newspaper stories or short stories. You can understand main ideas from a report, read from a website or college text book, etc. You can use what you have read to help you write an essay or make decisions. Writing: You can present information in different ways. You can use grammar, spelling and punctuation correctly. You can present your thoughts and ideas in a clear way that people can understand.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 1

  • Interpret Information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; read scales on familiar measuring equipment using everyday units; make accurate observations; identify suitable calculations to get the results you need for your task. Carry out calculations: You can add and subtract, with whole numbers and simple decimals, with or without a calculator; work to the level of accuracy you have been told to use; multiply and divide a simple decimal by a whole number with or without a calculator; understand and calculate simple fractions and percentages; work out the area and volum of rectangular-based shapes; use scale on diagrams; use ratio and proportion; find the average or mean of up to 10 items; find the range for up to 10 items.


What qualification will I receive?
You will receive the following qualifications: Intermediate Construction Diploma; NVQ 2 in Painting & Decorating; Level 1 Key Skills: Communication and Application of Number; Apprenticeship Framework Certificate.

Where can it lead?
On completion of the above qualifications, candidates can progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

What will I study?
The course covers both practical and theoretical practices and principles in painting and decorating. You will gain knowledge and practical experience and will learn how to carry out safe working practices in construction, how to prepare surfaces for decoration, apply paint systems by brush and roller, apply standard papers to walls and ceilings, produce specialist decorative finishes, apply water-borne paint systems using high volume low pressure (HVLP) spray equipment and other set units.

How will I be taught?
The course consists of both practical and theoretical lessons. The College's workshops are equipped with the latest technology and resources to support your learning.

How will I be assessed?
You will take an online test at end of each module. Assessors will assess your practical work both at college and in the workplace.

What support is available while I am on the course?
You will be assigned to an Apprenticeship Coordinator who will be responsible for supporting you throughout the duration of your training. They will work closely with your employer to ensure that you meet the range of work required for the completion of the NVQ. You will also have regular tutorials with your course tutor. The College offers a comprehensive range of support services which includes learning and language support.

What will it cost?

If you are 19 and over your employer will be required to contribute towards your course fees.
