All students will be selected by an individual interview. Applicants who wish to be considered for entry to the Infant Observation Course will be asked to provide evidence of: Successful completion of an accredited Diploma Course in. psychodynamic counselling. On going personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A completed application form.

Aims of the Course
The aim of the Infant Observation Course is to develop an understanding of human development and interaction through observing an infant in the setting of their home. The student visits the child in the family home for an hour each week from birth for one year.
The theoretical focus of the Course is psychoanalytic and the theoretical knowledge is drawn from the main psychoanalytic schools.
In addition to the weekly one hour Observation the Course includes a one and a half hour weekly workshop which includes discussion through case presentation, videos and papers.
There are four 10 week terms for a one year observation.
The first term will consist of preparation for an infant observation. All students are expected to commence an actual infant observation by the beginning of the second term
Content and Method
1. Weekly observation of a baby and mother in the home.
2. Detailed observations will be written for discussion in a weekly workshop during the whole Course.
3. The Tutor will recommend relevant reading material.
4. A Diploma will be awarded on the successful completion of the Infant Observation Course.
5. Course completion depends on the following:
- sufficient attendance
- a capacity to fulfil the published assessment criteria
- submission of an Infant Observation Paper. The paper will be read by two Readers according to published criteria.
A Diploma will be awarded on the successful completion of all areas of the Infant Observation Course.
