Course programme
The transition to secondary school represents a big change for children and their parents/carers. In addition to general concerns around coping with schoolwork, homework and new routines, this transition also coincides with the onset of puberty and adolescence. It can generate wider concerns, including peer pressure, bullying, relationships, and changes in the parent-child relationship. Transition support is now regarded by schools, statutory organisations and the voluntary sector as key with a view to tackling any issues and preventing future difficulties.
Using examples from research and practice, this course will highlight children's and parents' information and support needs, and practical support strategies. This is an introductory course.
The course covers:
- Transition issues for children and parents
- A range of approaches to supporting children and parents
- Different ways of working with and engaging parents
- Resources for practitioners, parents, children and young people Messages from research
