Art Appreciation : Art in 20th Century Europe & America

Level: All Levels

Course content:
3 courses offered this academic year, which, taken together, survey major developments in painting and sculpture (and additionally architecture in part 2.) in Europe and America in the 20th century
1st Term will look at two of the first major art movements of the century, Fauvism and Cubism, while studying the entire careers of their respective founders, Picasso and Matisse. The rise of Expressionism and its origins will be a second component of the course. We will then turn to the competing schools of Realism and Modernism in America (including Edward Hopper) and finally to the birth of modern sculpture in the work of Brancusi. At the end of the course students should be able to:
- Identify those features, formal and philosophical, which differentiate the art of the early 20th century from what had gone before.
- Discuss the art and ideas of the time in the light of wider social, political and cultural issues.
2nd Term looks at art's engagement with the modern world of technology and ideology across media and across European national boundaries ( Futurism, Russian Constructivism,Mondrian and de Stijl,Bauhaus etc.), the re-emergence of fantasy with Surrealism and the beginnings of British Modernism in the Bloomsbury Group and Sickert and the Camden Town Group. At the end of the course students should be able to:
- Identify the key ideas that drive radical modernist groups committed to changing the social and political order.
- Assess the significance of Freud's theories for the Surrealists.
- Describe the impact of continental ideas upon the nascent modern British art scene.
