Course Overview The course is aimed at people who wish to exercise their mind and add another social skill. At the end of the year you will enjoy playing social rubber bridge. Bring a biro or pencil to the lessons
Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a formal qualification.
Course Content: The aim of the course is to teach learners card play skills, the rules and mechanics of bridge and sufficient Standard English ACOL to enable the learners to enjoy playing social rubber bridge. Term A: Minibridge; playing with trumps; introducing declarer play; defence!; scoring and objectives; how the auction works; opening 1 NT and responses; 1 level suit openings and responses; raises, no trumps and suit responses. Term B: Openers, rebids - weak and strong, unbalanced; rebidding no trumps; competition; declarer play in NT and suit contracts; the opening leads, more defence; simple suit overcalls; simple T/O doubles. Term C: 1 NT overcall and responses; stayman; revision of the contested and uncontested auction; 2 NT ning and responses; 2 C openings and responses; strong 2's and responses.
Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.
Course Assessment: There is no formal assessment but learner's achievement will be monitored by the lecturer and feedback will be given.
Progression: Learners can progress to Beginners Bridge Year 2, playing in Bridge Clubs or to Intermediate Bridge
Homework: Homework is not essential but learners will benefit from playing bridge during the weeks of the course.
Additional Costs: There are no required texts but learners will benefit from buying materials from the English Bridge Union at a cost of about 15 per unit.

- Fees quoted with the course information are for the current academic year. Fees for the next academic year starting in September are subject to change and will be confirmed annually.
- Part Time Course Fee Relate to Year 1 course fees only. Two year course fees will have an additional course fee for the second year; these fees are subject to confirmation annually.
