Course Duration
1 year, 3 days per week and 1 weekend of yard duties every 3rd week.

Course Content
  • Equitation theory
  • Develop riding skills on the flat
  • Horse husbandry and stable skills
  • Fitness and training
  • Horse anatomy and physiology
  • Training horses from the ground

Course content (optional)
  • Riding instructor training (BHS PTT)
  • Develop riding skills over jumps
  • Equine fitness


Assessment Method
Assessment is through BHS examination with students encouraged to relate theory to practice at all stages.

Progression Routes
Successful students with satisfactory grades can further enhance their skills by enrolling onto higher BHS examinations or the National Diploma. Alternatively, you may enter the industry as an instructor, groom, stable manager, rider, welfare officer or trainer.

Specialist Equipment Needed
You will need a BSI approved riding hat, riding boots, gloves, jodhpurs, navy blue jumpers or sweatshirts, body protector, whip, hoof-pick and grooming kit.
