Suitable For

This course is suitable for beginners with an interest in acquiring the skills needed to communicate with deaf and hearing impaired people.

Course Content

The course provides information about deaf and hearing impaired people, deaf culture and the deaf community. It enables the learner to acquire a basic ability to communicate with deaf people using sign language. Learners will be encouraged to adopt a flexible approach to those deaf people who prefer to use an English-based system of signing.

Method of Assessment

Assessment will be carried out throughout the course. Learning will be based around group participation in a supportive and encouraging environment. The qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately. Candidates who are new to BSL should cover the introductory unit first, as units 102 and 103 build on this knowledge. Unit BSL 101 is internally assessed by your own Tutor. Please note that all exams are required to be videotaped to meet the requirements of the Quality Curriculum Authority (QCA).

Students may wish to progress to BSL Level 2.
