Summary:

This qualification will be taken by those deemed to be in the Associate Teacher Role (see below for a description of this role). City College will offer the qualification at both Level 3 and 4, according to the needs and abilities of their learners. The programme will run for one academic year.

The Certificate comprises three mandatory units with a total value of 18 credits, and optional units to the value of a minimum of six credits, making a minimum total value of 24 credits . This qualification replaces the City and Guilds 7302 Diploma in Delivering Learning.

Core Skills:

Mandatory Units

Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector: 6 credits
Planning and enabling learning: 9 credits
Principles and practice of assessment: 3 credits

Optional units

To the value of at least six credits .

Optional units will be developed by LLUK and ABs in partnership. They may:
  • reflect the context or setting in which teaching and learning takes place
  • be elements related to a particular teaching role
  • be specialised units on particular subjects, for example 'assessment'

It might be necessary for learners undertaking the Certificate to take additional optional units, according to the focus of their work, and its specific requirements.

Elements of the

Minimum Core of Literacy, Language and Numeracy

will be embedded in this qualification.

Assessment:
Assessed via written theoretical work plus practical teaching and observation of this practice.

The associate teacher role:
This is defined by LLUK as carrying fewer teaching responsibilities than the full role, but the quality of teaching is expected to be of an equally high standard. Someone is deemed to be in an Associate Teacher Role if their role and responsibilities are to teach predominantly in at least one of the following ways:
  • from packs/pre-prepared materials, and therefore has fewer responsibilities in design of curriculum and materials
  • on a one to one basis
  • programme confined to a particular level/subject/type of learner (i.e. does not develop or deliver a full range across a curriculum area)
  • short courses
