Course aims:
Do you want to start a career in childcare? Do you currently work with children but do not hold a childcare qualification? If the answer is yes, then this could be the course for you!
The Childrens Care and Development NVQ 2 aims to provide you with a recognised and valued qualification that will increase your employment potential and enable you to work in nurseries, pre-school groups or in schools as assistants or classroom helpers.
By the end of the course you will have a solid understanding of how to keep children safe, support and play concepts and supporting childrens development and you will feel well prepared to find employment or move onto the next level of your course.

Course content:
There are six mandatory units that must be covered in order to achieve the qualification:
  • Contribute to positive relationships
  • Help to keep children Safe
  • Support childrens development
  • Use support to develop own practice in the childrens care learning and development
  • Prepare and maintain environments to meet the childrens needs
  • Support childrens play and learning.

You will also pick an optional unit with the guidance of your assessor.

Facilities for students:
You will have full use of all the college facilities including the computer suite and the library.

Tutors:
The assessment team for this course have gained vast experience from the childcare industry. They have come from the nursery, Childminding and primary school industries. The tutors really make the course come alive, and share stories of their experiences.

Assessment: Throughout the course you will build up a portfolio of evidence. This will consist of:
  • Assessment by one of the assessment team in the work place while carrying out your day to day duties throughout the course.
  • Knowledge questions, completed after the work shops.
  • Witness accounts completed by your work place supervisor
  • Self reflective account on your practise.


Awarding Body: City & Guilds

Entry Requirements:

Interview preparation:
You may wish to purchase one of the CCLD NVQ 2 text books.

Progression and links:
Once you have completed the NVQ Level 2 and gained employment in a nursery setting you may like to consider a Level 3 CCLD NVQ.
However, please bare in mind that you will need to be a Key worker and undertaking some Level 3 duties
Upon completion of this qualification you are a Qualified Nursery Assistant! You will be able to apply for any jobs that are advertised stating that you should be Level two qualified.

Work experience opportunities:
Whilst you study with us you must be gaining experience in a nursery for at least 9 hours a week.

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
