Course Overview This course will help to develop self-awareness, provide a knowledge and understanding of the counselling skills that are necessary for further training leading to further counselling theory and practice. The course is aim at people who want to work in a helping interaction with a view to pursuing further study leading at training as a counsellor. By the end of the course learners will have covered the core skills and knowledge and understanding of beginnings, middle stage and endings of the helping interaction. Students will also learn how to apply a repertoire of skills and to work with silence, have a basic knowledge of the models of counselling and with develop a confidence that they can apply skills effectively.

Qualification gained: A level two intermediate qualification in Counselling Skills

Course Content: There are seven units on the course: Using counselling skills ethically and safely, Managing helping interactions, Communicating empathetic understanding, Managing an active listening spac,e Using self-awareness to facilitate helping work, Using counselling skills coherently, Using study skills to help manage learning.

Work Experience: There is no work experience element to this course.

Course Assessment: There will be a weekly learning review and tutor observation. There will also be written assignments, case studies and workshops. All learners will have the opportunity to discuss assessments with their tutor during scheduled tutorials.

Progression: Progression on to a level three counselling qualification.

Homework: A learning review (600-800 words) will need to be completed after each session.

Additional Costs: Learners should expect to purchase study materials costing in the region of 90.
