Course Overview This course is aimed at those who want to start writing but are not sure how to go about it. It will provide opportunities to experiment in a number of different genres and, in so doing, it will introduce the main features of effective writing and help to refine technique. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: notepad and pen.

Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a formal qualification.

Course Content: The aim of this course is for learners to develop the basic skills to write effectively in a range of genres, styles and voices and to promote opportunities for them to gain confidence through their experiences. Learners will develop or improve their skills in : developing credible characters in realistic settings; understanding and using dialogue; developing plot and subplot; creating tension and drama; writing narrative and description; writing in different voices and style; using point of view; writing short stories; getting started and keeping going; writing in a range of genres; giving and receiving feedback; getting in touch with feelings and the unconscious to prevent blockages; organising and shaping longer passages; writing synopses.

Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be tested through observation, peer and lecturer feedback.

Progression: Learners can progress to improvers and advanced creative writing courses where the emphasis will be on detailed application of the principles to a longer piece of writing.

Homework: Homework (reading, assignments) is essential and learners will benefit from undertaking home study of approximately 1-2 hours per week.

Additional Costs: Learners may need to contribute to the cost of the end-of-term book produced using the best writing from each learner.
