Course Overview There are approximately 750,000 people in this country who have some form of a dementia. This course is designed for anyone who wishes to improve their knowledge and understanding of the condition and of how to apply the principles of person centred dementia care. As a distance learning course a specialist tutor will be assigned to you for the duration of your course, who will provide individual support and guidance. The course begins with an initial induction meeting, where workbooks will be handed out, all your course work will be found in these books. The duration of the course is 120 guided learning hours. Study is at your own pace, normally 4-5 months. The day and time of your tutorial will be drawn up with your tutor to create your individual action plan. This course is Distance Learning, your tutor will visit you either at your place of work, or at Newbury College if you are not in employment.

Qualification gained: NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Awareness.

Course Content: The course aims to provide candidates with an understanding of dementia, the functioning of the brain, and the memory process. The course encourages candidates to use a person-centred approach in order to understand emotions and behaviours they may find challenging. The course work also promotes the application of person-centred principles to everyday care activities, provides employers with a structured training programme which will meet the training needs of their employees and facilitates career development. There are four units covering: understanding dementia; understanding person-centred care; using a person-centred approach to understand emotions and behaviour; applying person-centred principals to personal care, meal times, activities and the caring environment.

Course Assessment: Assessment is through a series of questions found in the candidates workbook. These are completed at the end of each unit. These assessments are tutor marked and moderated by the awarding body.

Additional Costs: If you are not eligible for public funds, the full cost of the course is 638.

  • Part Time Course Fee Relate to Year 1 course fees only. Two year course fees will have an additional course fee for the second year; these fees are subject to confirmation annually.
