Course Overview Through an exploration of art history, composition, design, colour, shape and tone learners will gain a broad understanding of painting and drawing. The course will enable learners to develop and expand their own chosen media and subject matter. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: A3 Sketchbook,willow/ compressed charcoal, HB, 2B, 4B pencils, eraser, pens and any other drawing materials prefered
Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a formal qualification.
Course Content: Term A: Media exploration through figure and expression: Basic drawing and painting techniques; body and movement; perception of shape; perception of spaces; perception of relationships; colour theory; feeling and emotion through mark making; colour and expression; technical skills relating to specific media. Art History: Abstract expressionism, Jackson Pollock, Fauvism, Kandinsky. Term B: Developing a visual language: subject matter and sources of inspiration (landscape/ townscape, still life), collage and texture, tone through colour and monochrome, composition, perspective, size, scale and structure, drawing outside, communicating ideas and feelings, developing initial original ideas through chosen subject and media, technical skills relating to specific media. Art History: Cezanne, Cubism, Renaissance, Realism and surrealism. Term C: Personal Development: Individual research and development, further development of chosen media and subject, critical attitudes, production of a final piece, preparing to exhibit, technical skills relating to specific media. Art History: Contemporary painting and drawing (1990+)
Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.
Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be assessed through observation, presentation, peer and lecturer feedback.
Progression: Learners can progress to intermediate level Art courses.
Homework: Homework is not essential but learners will benefit from undertaking home study (assignments, collecting materials, research) of approximately 1- 2 hours per week.
Additional Costs: Learners will be required to provide their own materials.
