Summary:
The course is open to applicants over the age of 19 years. If you want a career in hairdressing, this course will get you off to a flying start, giving both experience and a recognised qualification. It offers a good balance of practical and theoretical work.
VRQ Level 2 in the first year. If the VRQ is successfully achieved, students will be able to progress onto an NVQ Level 2. The VRQ gives the student an underpinning knowledge of all the hairdressing skills plus tuition towards all the relevant practical skills. The NVQ will assess commercial competence in practical skills and confirm relevant underpinning knowledge and understanding.

Full Description:
The VRQ Level 2 is made up of four mandatory generic units;
Unit 201 Working in hairdressing
Unit 202 Maintain the health and safety of the salon
Unit 203 Client consultation for hairdressing services
Unit 204 Shampoo and condition the hair scalp
Four mandatory technical units;
Unit 205 Cut women's hair
Unit 206 Style and dress women's hair
Unit 207 Colour hair
Unit 208 Perm and neutralise hair
And one optional unit chosen from 6 options.
The NVQ Level 2 is made up of eight mandatory units;
- G20 (G1) - Make sure your own actions reduce risks health and safety.
- G17 (G5) - Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation.
- G7 - Advise and consult with clients
- GH8 (H9) - Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp.
- GH10 (H10) - Style and finish hair.
- GH11 (H10) - Set and dress hair.
- GH12 (H6) - Cut hair using basic techniques.
- GH9 (H13) - Change hair colour.
Plus one optional unit
- G4 - Fulfil salon reception duties.
- G18 (G6) - Promote additional services or products to clients.
- G8 - Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work.
- GH13 - Plait and twist hair.
- GH14 (H12) - Perm and neutralise hair.
- GH15 - Attach hair to enhance a style.
After completing the programme you can expect a successful career in hairdressing. You can also progress to Level 3. Your assessor will watch you working and assess what you do against the NVQ standards.
Costs:
You will need to purchase a hairdressing kit (approx cost £180) and a salon tunic (approx cost £35) in order to commence your studies. A deposit will be taken during enrolment.
