Part Time Introduction to Blacksmithing

Course Description
An introductory course in the basic techniques of traditional blacksmithing, the course will comprise of practical demonstrations and exercises in general smithing, including workshop safety, the management of the blacksmiths forge and the use of various blacksmith tools and equipment.

Course Content
It is designed specifically to enable beginners to acquire the blacksmithing skills of drawing down, upsetting, bending, cutting/splitting, punching and producing decorative twists in ironwork.

• State Health and Safety requirements related to the safe use of open fire/forges
• Identify the different types of tools used in blacksmithing
• Develop tools skills to produce decorative ironwork
• Complete a variety of projects in domestic/decorative ironwork such as, pokers, candlesticks and practical ironwork including, tongs, brackets and hooks.

Method of Assessment
Demonstrations of all techniques · constant practical work throughout length of course. One-to-one tutored sessions and provision of reference material from tutor. Constant observation of other students at work in the group. Regular and constant feedback, photographs will be taken by tutor to record all work produced illustrating work in progress. Your learning diary of work in progress will provide a record of your learning.


Entry Requirement

Open access to anyone with a keen interest in developing their skills, ideal for the beginner with little or no experience or for people wanting to enhance their existing skills. This course will appeal to those of creative outlook, although no previous experience is necessary. There will be an element involving calculating and measuring. This activity can be quite physical so manual dexterity is important.
