Is the course for me?
This course is for you if you are interested in a career in book-keeping or accounting, or just want to gain a basic understanding of the underlying principles and practices. It is aimed at those of you who are new to the skills and knowledge required of bookkeepers and will prepare you for employment in bookkeeping job roles.

What will I learn?
You will develop the skills necessary to accurately record financial transactions, using double-entry principles, in relevant ledger accounts and balance off same. There are five units which can be studied, comprising of: Unit 1 - Posting to accounts Unit 2 - Maintaining petty cash Unit 3 - Maintaining the cash book Unit 4 - Maintaining ledgers (computerised) Unit 5 - Processing sales and purchases documents (computerised) For a full award, you must pass the mandatory Unit 1 (Posting to accounts) plus any other two non-mandatory units.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment for unit 1 is by examination held at set times during the year. Units 2, 3, 4 and 5 are assessed by OCR-set assignments that are administered by the college, the dates for these will be decided by the course tutor. All examination tasks and assignment tasks are practical and allow you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in a format that is both logical and realistic.

What can I do after the course?
Successful completion of this course allows progression on to the OCR or IAB Certificate in Book-keeping Level 2 or the AAT Foundation NVQ level 2 in Accounting
