Safe Handling Of Medicines Certificate
This course aims to provide students with the essential underpinning knowledge, and the opportunity to demonstrate the skills required to safely handle and administer medicines in their workplace. It is designed for employees responsible for the care of others who need support and assistance in the administration of their medication. This includes, for example, care workers in residential homes, supported housing, and domiciliary care. The qualification is designed to meet the demand for trained and qualified health and social care staff in relation to the handling and administration of medicines. It also meets the requirement that the training must be accredited and according to the guidelines from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Nursing and Midwifery Council and the National Minimum Standards for care homes and domiciliary care in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Course Content:
The course comprises three units of equal weighting: Unit 01: An introduction to medicines in a care setting As an introduction to medicines you will discuss with your tutor what medicines are and research the different categories, types, and forms of medicines. You will also learn about their benefits and the risks associated with medicines in your work setting. The legal roles and responsibilities of all those involved in supporting individuals with their medication will be explained to you. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • & responsibilities of those involved in supporting individuals with their medication Unit 02: Receiving, storing and disposing of medicines in a care setting In this unit you will research current legislation, guidelines and organizational policies and procedures. You will learn about the safe working practices for the receiving, storing and disposing of medicines in your own workplace. This information will be related to your role as an employee, to ensure that you work at all times within the constraints of health, safety, security and confidentiality when handling medicines. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
  • Describe the correct procedure for receiving medicines
  • Describe the correct procedure and conditions for storing medicines
  • Describe how to dispose of medicines correctly and safely

Unit 03: Administering medicines in a care setting In this unit you will learn about legislation, guidelines, and organizational policies for the administration of medicines. From these you will learn how to prepare to administer medicines, correct procedures and how to report and record the administration of medicines at work. Your role as an employee will be considered to ensure that you work at all times within the constraints of health, safety, security and confidentiality. It will also ensure that you implement safe working practices when administering and assisting in the administration of medicines. Your knowledge and understanding will be specifically related to the job you are doing and the individuals you are working with.

There are no formal entry requirements for this programme, other than a standard of general education to at least Level 1 (equivalent to GCSEs at grades D-G).

There is no interview required.

Assessment:
Unit 1 is assessed through an ASET externally set and marked written assignment. Units 2 and 3 are assessed through an assessment set and marked by the College and moderated by ASET.

Progression Routes:
This programme can act as a platform for further learning and continuing professional development, such as progression to an NVQ in areas such as Health and Social Care at Level 2.
