From social media to security and banking, ICT is everywhere and its importance is becoming increasingly apparent in today's national curriculum. Computer science now counts as a science subject in the EBacc performance measure. These changes will create huge demand for a fresh wave of talented and energetic computing teachers.
Why study PGCE Secondary Education Computer Science with ICT at Middlesex University?
This one-year full-time course enables you to meet the national standards for the award of qualified teacher status.
Subject studies focus on the development of Computer Science with ICT capability at Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and post-16. In addition, during your studies you will undertake teaching placements in at least two secondary schools and have the chance to acquire skills in the application of new technologies in teaching and learning. Schools are carefully selected to suit each individual and expose them to a variety of imaginative and thought provoking learning strategies. Key experts from our partner schools are on hand to offer invaluable mentoring and support.
Course highlights
Two-thirds of the duration of the course is on placement. We have excellent relationships with schools in London, Essex, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire; many graduates work in their first teaching job at their placement school
Through sustained exposure to a classroom environment, you will learn to exercise initiative and sound judgement when confronted by challenging situations
Diverse teaching placements enable you to understand, critically evaluate and respond to the needs of children in multicultural, multilingual and multi-faith settings and schools in an international, urban environment

What I would highlight: It was a good experience in all and food and clothes are a little cheaper but for sure you will be travelling more than at home. I enjoyed a lot.

Course content

What will you study on the PGCE Secondary Education Computer Science with ICT?

Through interactive workshops, tutorials, lectures and debates, our team of expert staff will equip you with the skills and experience necessary to enthuse and educate secondary pupils. You will critically evaluate the effectiveness of a wide range of resources and your own lesson plans. You will also analyse research data and critically evaluate how research has contributed to the knowledge and understanding of how to teach your subject effectively.

What will you gain?

In addition to developing the knowledge and skills required to teach your chosen subject, you will be able to identify and evaluate effective strategies for assessing children's learning through formative and summative assessment strategies. You will understand the importance of literacy, numeracy and ICT in delivering an effective, all-round curriculum.

  • Modules
    • School-Based Training 1 (20 Credits) - Compulsory

      This module aims to prepare you during your first school experience. It develops your preparation skills and enables collaboration with your fellow students, subject mentors, and professional coordinating mentors. You will learn to address and meet the expectations specified by the statutory teaching standards. The school-based element of this module lasts for approximately 50 days.

    • School-Based Training 2 (40 Credits) - Compulsory

      This module encourages you to build upon the experience gained in School Experience 1. It aims to provide an extended, individual school experience across the age ranges of 11-16, 11-18 or 14-19. You will undertake 74 days of teaching across a six-month period, so you can address the standards specified by the Teachers' Standards.
