About the subject
Photography is a creative and practical course which combines technical aspects of photographic image making with the aesthetic qualities of images. It is a course in which students can develop the practical skills to express ideas through the media of photography. Students will learn to critique other photographers' work as well as to develop and realise their own art.
Learning Styles
Lessons will contain critiques of photographer's work, analysis of composition, research and independent study. Technical lessons will take place both in the darkrooms, the new computer suite and in the classroom. It is expected that students will work independently on projects with teacher guidance.
Subject combinations and progression
Photography combines well with many creative and technical subjects. Typical combinations could be Art, Media Studies, Graphics, ICT and English Literature. Photography is also offered at degree level for a BA (Bachelor of Arts)
Subject modules and assessment
A/S - Subject Modules
At A/S, candidates should be introduced to a variety of experiences employing a range of media, processes and techniques appropriate to the chosen area of study.
The new AQA specification will start in September 2008 and will be examined in June 2009. The new specification consists of two Units. Unit 1 involves the development of a coursework portfolio exemplifying work carried out during the AS course. Unit 2 is an externally-set assignment. The question paper will contain five exciting starting points and the candidate will be invited to choose one.
A2 - Subject Modules
Unit 4 - Self Directed Study
For this unit the emphasis should be on self-directed study based on a personal issue, interest or concern. It is a research unit into an aspect of critical and historical studies of your own choice.
Unit 5 - Personal Study
The emphasis for this fifth coursework unit is on a personal study based upon an aspect of critical and historical study in art, craft or design of the candidate's own choice. Candidates are required to produce an illustrated written Personal study of approximately 3000 words.
Unit 6 - A Critical and Contextual Study
Candidates are required to submit a unit of practical work, supported by extended written material (approximately 1000 words) where the quality of written communication will be assessed.
Unit 7 - Controlled Test (Exam)
In this final unit, you will be set a range of questions from the exam board. You will take one of these as a starting point for the controlled test.
The new A2 specification will start in September 2009
