Course programme

BA (Hons) Photography

This programme has been designed from inception by photographic practitioners with the sole objective of providing a comprehensive and innovative education within this discipline of the visual arts. The support and guidance of the programme team will help to ensure that the learning needs of the programmes small sized cohorts are individually addressed. This course is currently the only B.A. [hons] in Photography delivered in Merseyside and is validated through Liverpool John Moores University.

What will I study?

This comprehensive programme is modular in design and has a good balance of theory to practice. It covers a variety of specialist disciplines within the field of photographic image making, using both analogue and digital processes. The facilities for both aspects of photography are industry standard and the programme is delivered by professional photographic practitioners. The programme can also be considered a route through to higher level postgraduate research and study. Level One: Level one looks at setting the technical foundations for the following two levels including modules such as Photographic Techniques and Contemporary Media and Applications. Here you will work both on location and in the studio, creating reportage photostorys and developing your critical understanding of photography through image exploration. Level Two: Level two builds upon the previous level and through lectures, seminars and workshops offers the opportunity to develop your own Research Methodologies. This level also incorporates projects run in collaboration with other HE programmes within the College of Arts and also entry to a series of National Competitions. Level Three: Level three consolidates your learning placing the emphasis upon individual research development. Spending time on Professional Practice and Portfolio Development, this level supports preparation for your end of year Degree Show.

How is it assessed?

The programme employs a number of different assessment methods including practical and research based coursework, assignments, seminar presentations, portfolio submissions, competition submissions, evaluative report writing and practical project work. All successful applicants will be required to attend an interview with the Programme Leader. This is designed to be an informal meeting, providing you with the opportunity to see if the programme is suitable for your needs. It will also offer the programme team the opportunity to discuss and view your portfolio. Students will be assessed both individually and as a member of a team. All students will be issued with an Academic Year Planner during the programme induction which details all deadlines for each level of study.

Future prospects?

Students graduating from this programme will have achieved a comprehensive broad based qualification which will seriously enhance their career prospects within the photographic industry. The programme may be used to prepare students for either Teacher Training or Postgraduate level study including M.A. or PhD.
