Pilates is an intelligent and holistic form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates which emphasises the balanced development of the body through strength, flexibility and awareness in order to support efficient and graceful movement.
Pilates has long been recommended as one of the safest forms of exercise by physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and doctors and it is beneficial for nearly everybody, regardless of age, body shape and fitness level. The reason Pilates is so successful is that each exercise can be modified to suit the needs of the individual. It can be used to improve general fitness levels, to help with specific health conditions, for physical rehabilitation and to improve the performance of sporting professionals and dancers.
To gain the full benefits from Pilates it is important to be taught by a Pilates teacher who has an excellent anatomical understanding of the body's muscular and skeletal systems as well as a deep understanding of the Pilates philosophical foundations which include centering, concentration, control, precision, breath and flow.
Pilates is safe for all of the following complaints and it can offer relief from and improvement of some complaints: asthma, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, cerebral palsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, facet joint syndrome, fibromyalgia, frozen shoulder, golfer's elbow, hip replacement, hypertension, hypermobility, hypotension, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, Parkinson's Disease, rheumatoid arthritis, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, stenosis, stress incontinence, stroke, tennis elbow, thoracic outlet syndrome and RSI.
