About this course

Qualification requirements are a minimum of grades D in literacy and numeracy and a Level 1 Diploma. Applicants should show a keen interest in the construction industry and in particular your own chosen craft area, along with listening skills and the ability to attend punctually. As appropriate, learning support is available to students.

Course Content: The course is designed for learners who wish to gain a hands-on appreciation of Core Craft and associated fields of study surrounding Sustainable Building, Social Issues and Entrepreneurial Skills. You will acquire the introductory knowledge and skills relevant to the construction industry in the above disciplines whilst working in a supportive environment.

The course offers students an opportunity to develop hands on practical skills in a real working environment with own autonomy, covering all aspects of bricklaying, scaffolding, setting out and related areas. The course consists of units that include: an introduction to the industry; estimating; methods of working; building design; and construction. Key-skills are also included in communications, information technology and mathematics.

In addition to the core elements a programme of tutorials and enrichment activities and topics are provided.

Upon completion of the course you will receive the relevant Diploma Level 2. Success in Key Skills will also be certificated.

Special Features: Students learn through a combination of practice workshops; classroom sessions; individual guided learning and support; and independent study. The emphasis is on the core and associated skill requirements where competency will be assessed to occupational standards and knowledge tested. The Tutors provide ongoing feedback. All learners will sit a final test to pass the course either on-line or written, dependant on awarding body requirements.

Personal protective clothing is provided, however equipment and basic hand-tools are required by the applicant. Students should provide their own pens, pencils and A4 pad and ring binder.

Course Format: Students are required to attend full-time for a maximum of 24 hours per week. Additional subjects may be extra.

Progression: Successful completion of the course will lead to further vocational training and learning, progressing to either Levels 2-3 NVQ C&G/CITB work-based/Modern Apprenticeship and employment.

Note: The relevant Skill for Life Qualifications must be gained to qualify for progression
