This pottery taster course for beginners will guide you through a range of techniques for making 3D forms, including pinching, slabbing, coiling and throwing. You may select pieces of work to be fired for an additional glazing working shop in September (‘Glazing your work’ VR767 / VR766).

About this course

- Prepare materials and make pinch pots
- Roll and join clay to form soft-slab pots
- Form and join coils to make coil pots
- Throw clay on the potter’s wheel
- Decorate finished forms using coloured slips.

There is a charge of £2.00 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £17.50 per bag/ £8.75 per half bag.

For health and safety reasons you should wear closed footwear (no sandals or flip flops) and be aware that clothes may get messy although aprons will be provided.

Course programme

This highly practical course will cover:
- Materials preparation
- A range of hand-building techniques
- Introduction to throwing on the potter’s wheel
- Adding colour and texture detail to clay
- Discussion of drying and firing processes (selected work will be fired after the course).

The course is practical, with group and individual demonstrations and explanations. There will also be an opportunity to look at and discuss the work of current and recent makers.

Additional information

City Lit Ceramics offers a range of part-time, full-time courses and workshops at different levels. Students will be encouraged to progress onto more challenging projects at their individual level. There will also be a glazing session mid- September if you would like to glaze work from your summer school (course codes VR767, VR766).
